ICYMI: New Data Highlights Rapidly Growing Use of 6 GHz Wi‑Fi Spectrum
Data shared with the FCC by five of the biggest U.S. Wi-Fi providers shows 6 GHz Wi-Fi adoption growing at an unprecedented pace, with traffic spread across the entire band.
Washington, D.C. – New data released this week shows that the 6 GHz Wi-Fi band is experiencing far faster consumer adoption and traffic growth than previously understood – pacing well ahead of the growth of earlier Wi-Fi bands.
The study, reflecting 2026 data drawn from five of the country’s largest Wi-Fi providers and more than 13 million Wi-Fi access points, comes six years after the first Trump Administration’s FCC unlocked the full band for unlicensed use. The findings show that adoption of 6 GHz Wi-Fi has grown rapidly since 2020 and that consumers, businesses of all sizes, and large venues are relying on the full breadth of the band to meet growing connectivity demands.
“Six years after it was opened for Wi-Fi, the 6 GHz band has become an essential part of how Americans connect,” said Mary Brown, Executive Director of WifiForward. “This important study shows that consumers and businesses are using the entire band every day, illustrating how critical Wi-Fi is for consumers. Preserving full access to 6 GHz spectrum will help ensure Americans continue to benefit from fast, reliable Wi-Fi for years to come.”
Since the band was opened for unlicensed use, 6 GHz-enabled technology has expanded significantly. The study finds that 1.1 billion 6 GHz chipsets shipped globally in 2025, and, by the end of this year, 4.1 billion 6 GHz-enabled devices are projected to be sold worldwide since the band was opened to Wi-Fi in 2020.
The report highlights several other key findings:
- More than 50% of residential Wi-Fi use between 6 GHz-capable devices and access points now occurs on the 6 GHz band.
- Wi-Fi speeds in large venues, such as stadiums, is roughly three times higher when using the 6 GHz band compared to the smaller 5 GHz band.
- Usage is distributed across the entire band, with use of the band’s lower frequencies nearly proportional to use of its upper frequencies.
The findings also show that Americans use extends across the 6 GHz band, not just part of it. Data from homes, businesses, and large venues shows strong demand across the band, helping support faster connections and reliable service even in crowded environments. For example, the study found that during stadium events, nearly all available 6 GHz channels are in use, demonstrating the growing role the band plays in keeping people connected.
As policymakers consider the future of the 6 GHz band, the findings provide real-world evidence that consumers and businesses are already benefiting from access to the full band. A recent supportive paper presented at SCTE’s Tech Expo further underscored this point, finding that the 6 GHz band has reached scale and maturity at an unprecedented pace, contributing trillions of dollars in U.S. economic value.
