WifiForward Statement in Response to New RAND Report on Wi-Fi in the 5.9 GHz Band

Washington, D.C. – The RAND Corporation released a new economic analysis that finds opening up the 5.9 GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi could contribute up to $100 billion per year to the U.S. economy, and provide up to an additional $190 billion in economic surplus. Importantly, RAND lead author Diana Carew also unveiled a new model for assessing the potential value of unlicensed spectrum, meeting a need identified by Congress and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

WifiForward Praises FCC Leadership on Unleashing Unlicensed Spectrum

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Federal Communications Commission will consider several issues relating to unlicensed and shared spectrum including the Citizens Broadband Radio Service and expanding unlicensed operations to the 6 GHz spectrum band. In addition, in recent weeks there have been renewed calls from FCC Commissioners to open the unused 5.9 GHz band for unlicensed uses like Wi-Fi. WifiForward Consumer Survey: Bring On Wi-Fi 6

Last week, Wi-Fi got a new name. For the last two decades, whenever Wi-Fi got an upgrade (often), people had a new set of letters and numbers to deal with. The potential for confusion? High.  Now, each flavor of Wi-Fi will just have one number, so the newest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ax, will be known as Wi-Fi 6. Technology writers everywhere rejoiced. (Seriously, some of the headlines are pretty enthusiastic.)
