Wi-Fi powers nearly every part of modern life, from working and learning at home to connecting fans in packed stadiums and streaming major sporting events worldwide. As demand for connectivity continues to grow, ensuring fast, reliable Wi-Fi is available has never been more important.
Recently, WifiForward and industry groups celebrated World Wi-Fi Day through an engaging event with policymakers, Capitol Hill staff, and industry leaders at the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA) Innovation House. The event highlighted how Wi-Fi is critical in supporting large-scale sporting events and featured a hands-on demonstration from Amazon’s eero technology. The live demo showcased how reliable Wi-Fi networks help eliminate connectivity challenges, like buffering videos and disconnecting FaceTime calls, support the growing number of connected devices people depend on every day. Policymakers like Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks saw firsthand how strong Wi-Fi performance has become essential to people’s ability to stream content at home, work remotely, or access services in high-traffic environments.
Attendees also heard from industry experts, including Jim Florwick, Principal Technical Marketing Engineer at Cisco, and Rajat Ghai, Vice President of Xfinity Wi-Fi Engineering at Comcast, who discussed how Wi-Fi networks support crowded venues and help deliver uninterrupted experiences for fans both inside stadiums and watching from home.

Wi-Fi Powers the Modern Fan Experience
The event focused on how Wi-Fi has become essential to nearly every aspect of the stadium experience. Fans rely on wireless connectivity to access mobile tickets, find friends, order food, post on social media, connect with ride-share services, and more.
When discussing connectivity at the Philadelphia Sports Complex, Ghai highlighted how important strong Wi-Fi has become during peak demand moments:
“We actually saw amazing performance once we deployed 6 GHz… The part where you need connectivity the most is when the game ends, and 70,000 people are pouring out, you want to call an Uber and tell Uber where to pick you up, or when you want to figure out where your friends are… Nothing else will work, except for your apps that are working on 6 GHz.”
Ghai also noted that Wi-Fi now supports many of the systems that keep venues operating smoothly.
“It is all on Wi-Fi. The security, tickets… the NHL actually mandates a separate Wi-Fi network,” he said.
Florwick discussed how advances in Wi-Fi technology have helped venues keep pace with growing demand:
“We’ve been able to stay ahead with the technology,” he said. “It works so well everywhere, even [at] large events. We see it growing… the amount of data.”
That growth is happening fast. According to a recent ABI Research report, Wi-Fi has become “an integral part of the connectivity experience” at stadiums and arenas worldwide. Major sporting events require networks capable of supporting tens of thousands of users simultaneously, many of whom are live-streaming content, sharing photos and videos, and using high-bandwidth applications throughout an event.
The report also notes that Wi-Fi plays an increasingly important role behind the scenes, supporting digital ticketing, concessions, security operations, staff communications, and crowd management. As venues look for new ways to improve the fan experience, reliable connectivity has become a key part of the infrastructure that keeps events up and running.
The impact of newer Wi-Fi technologies is already showing results. ABI found that after one NCAA Division I football stadium deployed 6 GHz-enabled Wi-Fi, peak bandwidth demand increased by more than 72 percent, and total network traffic increased by more than 42 percent in a single season. The report projects that by 2030, nearly all Wi-Fi access point shipments to North American stadiums will support the 6 GHz band.
As Wi-Fi demand continues to grow in stadiums, schools, healthcare facilities, businesses, homes, and more, policymakers will play an important part in ensuring networks have sufficient unlicensed spectrum needed to keep pace. The recent World Wi-Fi Day event served as a reminder that the connections people rely on every day are supported by the policies and technologies being developed today.
