Going For Gold: 4K Live Streaming is Gold Standard for Olympics

In the last year, a lot of major events had to be postponed or even canceled, including one of the world’s most-watched and anticipated live sporting competitions: the Olympics. Fast forward to one year later, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are still facing impacts from Covid-19 and are happening with no fans in attendance. This means that more people than ever will be streaming Olympic fanfare online.

While it was immensely disappointing that the Olympics were postponed, the delay meant that more technological advancement, particularly in Wi-Fi capabilities, was possible. This summer, NBC Olympics, in partnership with Olympic Broadcasting Service, will bring the live events to U.S. households in 4K and even 8K definition. This means that for the first time ever, Americans can watch Simone Biles perform a Yurchenko double pike in 4K ultra-high-definition.

To take advantage of the 7,000+ hours of 4K streaming NBCUniversal is broadcasting, a good Wi-Fi connection is an absolute must-have. In the last few years, Wi-Fi innovation and new technologies have exploded, allowing us to enjoy higher quality videos and streams. And with the Tokyo Games, some events will also be live-streamed in 8K UHD for the first time, including opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events, swimming, soccer and volleyball.

And those with next-generation Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers and devices will see even faster, lower latency streams and can simulcast multiple events with no buffering. This means we might get to witness the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team win a gold medal in 8K, live, while also watching swimming, archery, basketball and surfing events at the same time.
