Acting Chair Rosenworcel touts the benefits of 6 GHz

At the beginning of this week, the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA) hosted its ninth annual DSA Global Summit, which virtually convened policymakers, regulators, academia and industry leaders to discuss today’s most pressing spectrum issues.

At the virtual event on Tuesday morning, acting FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel and DSA president Martha Suarez participated in a “fireside chat” in which Rosenworcel spoke about everything from tips for women in tech to the future of spectrum auctions. During the conversation, she spoke about the transformative nature of the 6 GHz band and what FCC action on the band means for the future of connectivity both domestically and globally.

Rosenworcel said that the FCC’s decision in that band was “quietly revolutionary.” Making all 1200 MHz of the 6 GHz band available to Wi-Fi, Rosenworcel said, is important for democratizing access to broadband, promoting innovation and beyond.

She also spoke about how the 6 GHz band will provide “more range” to Wi-Fi networks and lead to great advances for next-generation technologies like Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E. Rosenworcel noted, in particular, her excitement for how quickly Wi-Fi 6E devices are coming to market and how important the 6 GHz band will be for new devices that operate on wider channels.

She also addressed the global momentum in the 6 GHz band. She noted that the U.S. was proud to be a leader in modernizing the band and how decisions in Brazil, Peru, Canada, Saudi Arabia and more will be key “harmonizing spectrum” across the globe.
